Dr. Madduppa was working with Badan Pengelolaan Daerah Perlindungan Laut, Pulau Sebesi (Marine Protected Area community based) and Pusat Kajian Sumberdaya Pesisir dan Lautan, Institut Pertanian Bogor to make evaluation of management effectiveness and recommendations for strengthening management at the Sebesi Island Marine Sanctuary located in Lampung, from 2002 to 2004. During the project, local people were trained how to managed and monitor their reefs, other rehabilitation technique were also implemented on the disturbed reefs within the sanctuary. Madduppa also involved in the development of marine science and technology training since 2003, and this training course has educated more than 150 marine science students across Indonesia.
Madduppa is actively involved in education of undergraduate and graduate students in marine biology, including the training, supervising and mentoring of IPB students. He serves a week training course on marine biodiversity and molecular ecology for undergraduate, graduate and young researchers every year since 2012.
Madduppa is a reviewer in the Journal of Indonesian Coral Reefs, Indonesian Ichthyology Journal, International Journal of Marine Science and an active member of several professional societies (Indonesian Coral Reef Society, Indonesian Biodiversity Society and Indonesian Oceanology Society-ISOI) .
