"The concept of the 'Id' logo resembles a human fingerprint, which is unique, and no two fingerprints will be found identical among human beings. It also represents the highly diverse biodiversity of Indonesia, both on land and in the sea, and each province has its own unique characteristics."

Overview and description

Indonesia is one of the world’s largest biodiversity hotspots, outstanding not only in terms of biological richness and endemicity, but also reflecting the urgency to prioritize its conservation. The objectives of this SSC Group are: To engage experts on the country`s biodiversity to establish close coordination with representatives from key partners and government agencies, especially focusing on overlooked taxonomic groups (e.g., freshwater fishes, invertebrates, marine plants, marine mammals/marine megafauna, and fungi) and unrepresented geographical areas, especially from the eastern parts of Indonesia; To develop and regularly update Indonesia's National IUCN Red List of Threatened Species based on the global IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, as well as conducting regional Biodiversity/Species Conservation Planning, strengthening the network and capacity building for local scientists and conservation practitioners; To conduct regular meetings to strengthen the network, identify research and intervention priorities, and support the development of smaller working groups in response to certain biodiversity issues or initiatives; To build public constituents to support pro-biodiversity policies and mainstream biodiversity issues across sectors and ministries through diverse communication channels; To facilitate international collaboration where Indonesian scientists can contribute meaningfully to the international agenda to reverse biodiversity loss and growing scientific evidence of global biodiversity status.

SPECIALIST GROUP WORK

National IUCN Red List of Threatened Species

To develop and regularly update Indonesia’s National IUCN Red List of Threatened Species based on the global IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. This will be conducted regionally in conjunction with Biodiversity/Species Conservation Planning and the effort to strengthen the network and capacity building for local scientists and conservation practitioners.

Capacity Building

To enhance the capacity of the group members and key partners by firstly identifying the skills required to conduct species conservation planning and IUCN Red List assessment, and then arranging a series of workshops annually to equip them with these skills. This will be supplemented by providing concise and easily understandable IUCN guidelines/tools in Bahasa Indonesia to be used by the members and government partners.

IdSSG Annual Report

The IdSSG annual report aims to summarize and review all the activities conducted based on the Species Conservation Cycle aspects: Assess, Plan, Act, Communicate, and Network.
